Schumer bringing IVF protection bill to Senate floor
U.S. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer says he is bringing a bill to the floor Thursday to protect and expand access to IVF.
In-vitro fertilization is under attack, Schumer said.
The Alabama Supreme Court recently ruled to limit IVF treatment across the state, causing fertility clinics to shut down due to concerns about the legal repercussions.
A new CBS News/You-Gov Poll finds more than 85% of Americans support protecting IVF and say it should be legal, according to the senator.
“It sends shivers down your spine to think that an extreme group of people in the courts and in the legislatures would be so out of step with the vast, vast majority of Americans, and could threaten millions of families,” Schumer said.
Schumer’s “Right to IVF Act” would establish the nationwide right to receive, provide or cover IVF services, and it would also expand IVF insurance coverage.
