25th Annual Tugboat Roundup

Festival Celebrating History of Tugboats in New York.

WATERFORD, N.Y. (WNYT) – Tugboats traveled from Albany to Waterford Friday up the Hudson River as a part of Tugboat Roundup weekend.

The parade featured 20 boats according to Maritime Coordinator Emeritus, Tom Beardsley.

NewsChannel 13 traveled up the Hudson with one of the captains of the tugboats, N.D. Austin.

Austin is the captain of one of the oldest boats in the parade and he said he has been coming to this parade for about the past seven years.

“We sail up here every year from Brooklyn to Waterford. I love to come up here where the Erie Canal and Champlain Canal meet the Hudson River. This is the gathering. This is the spot,” Austin said.

On the journey up to Waterford, the tugboats voyaged through the locks.

“It’s always a little bit of a madhouse inside the lock as we’re coming up with all the boats packed into a little scrum but, you know, that’s the fun,” Austin said.

Once the boats arrived in Waterford, hundreds of people watched for the finale. Boats and fire trucks sprayed water, boats sound off their cannons, and all of the boats blew their horns.

Tugboat Roundup continues through Sunday in Waterford with vendors, live music, and fireworks scheduled.
