A large fire leaves a barn destroyed in Chatham
Cleanup is underway in Chatham after a large fire at a barn on Clark Road.
The Chatham Fire Department was dispatched after a call came in at 6:58 p.m. of an outside boiler fire.
That call was soon updated to a barn fire. Firefighters said they were working on the fire for more than five hours till about 1:30 Sunday morning.
The barn is located on a farm that is about 155 acres in size.
NewsChannel 13 spoke with Steven Meyer and his family. Steven’s dad Bob Meyer has lived at a home on the farm since 1962. Both Bob, Steven, and Bob’s other son all helped building the barn about 37 years ago.
Investigators tell NewsChannel 13 the barn is a total loss.
Bob said that over a 100 thousand dollars worth of farming equipment was lost in the fire.
Steven Meyer told NewsChannel 13 that his brother initially helped fight the fire with him but sustained injuries. Steven said his brother is dealing with second degree burns and is currently at the Westchester Burn Center recovering.
Steven said that his family was in the home next door to the barn and had no idea about the fire until his daughter pulled into the driveway.
“She peeked in, and she saw a little bit of a fire in there. So, we come running out. My brother and I, and we turn the air compressor on, turn the lights on. It had no lights to be had because fire was up in the attic,” Steven said.
Authorities have not yet released a cause for the fire.
