Activists protest against inmate’s death

Inmate’s death sparks protests statewide

The death of inmate Robert Brooks at the hands of corrections officers has called for change.

Activists gathered in front of the Governor’s Mansion on Monday to protest against the death of inmate Robert Brooks.

“Everyone agrees that this is a tragedy. Everyone agrees that Robert Brooks did not have to die,” said activist Jamaica Miles.

The FBI and Department of Justice confirmed on Monday that it is investigating the case.

“The FBI Albany Field Office and the Department of Justice are reviewing the facts and circumstances surrounding the death of Robert L. Brooks to determine the appropriate federal response. As this is an ongoing review, we are not able to comment further at this time.”

A video released Friday by the Attorney General’s Office showed corrections officers assaulting Brooks. Brooks later died. A total of 13 corrections officers have been suspended and one has resigned after Brooks died on Dec. 10.

Shawn Young co-founder of All of Us, a racial justice and community action group, said it is a shame that they have to do this all over again – attend another rally for a person “killed at the hands of the state.”

“When is it gonna end? How many times are we going to come out? What do we need to do different,” he said. “Every person in the state from the governor down needs to be held accountable for the lives lost in prisons in New York State.”

La-Meik Taylor, of Albany, said he was an incarcerated person himself. Now, he works as a senior technical assistance and training specialist for the New York State Youth Justice Institute.

“The conditions and treatment in America’s correctional facilities reflect this society’s values and the tragic death of Robert Brooks shows we have much work to do,” he said.

Taylor said the goals of All of Us are to ensure that body cameras are activated for corrections officers staff with penalties if they do not comply, mandatory training for de-escalation training and improved access to mental health services.
