Advocates at state Capitol call for better prison, jail oversight

People at the New York State Capitol are calling for more oversight of prisons and jails.

This comes as the safety of inmates and prison guards has become the focus of activist groups statewide.

Former inmates and lawmakers are calling for the state to pass a bill that would increase the number of members on the New York State Commission of Correction.

“I’m tired. We are not doing this anymore. It needs to stop. If the rule of the law is no longer the rule of law anymore, it is chaos, then say that out loud,” said Thomas Kearney with the New York State Jail Justice Network.
