Advocates: Correction workers’ convictions part of a long road toward justice

The Center for Law and Justice in Albany released a statement on Friday, after six correction workers at Marcy Correctional Facility were charged with murder in the death of Robert Brooks.

The Center for Law and Justice in Albany released a statement on Friday, after six correction workers at Marcy Correctional Facility were charged with murder in the death of Robert Brooks.

Several others were charged with manslaughter.

“This is only the beginning of a long road toward justice,” the statement read. “We will continue to monitor this case closely, advocating for transparency, due process, and systemic reforms to prevent future tragedies.”

One worker was charged with tampering with physical evidence. The evidence in question was Brooks own blood.

Officer Nicholas Gentile cleaned blood stains from the room in an effort to conceal evidence of the assault, according to the indictment.

Brooks had injuries to his head, neck, thyroid cartilage, torso, liver and other places on his body, according to special prosecutor Bill Fitzpatrick.

The indictment also claims Brooks died by choking on his own blood.

This all happened back in early December. The body-worn camera video was released a short time later, leading to massive condemnation across the board.
