New York Attorney General Letitia James has opened an investigation into the death of the man shot by Johnstown Police.

Nathan Wood of Bleecker was killed.

Wood, 28, broke into a home on Washington Street and beat someone inside with a hammer, police said.

Wood then allegedly hit a police officer who responded to the call. That’s when he was shot, police said. He later died at the hospital.

The police officer and the victim in the hammer attack are both expected to recover.

State law requires the Attorney General’s Office to look at every incident where a police officer causes the death of a person.
