The now-former CEO of Albany Airport, Phil Calderone, was fired while he was in the hospital.

As NewsChannel 13 reported on Wednesday, the Airport Authority voted to fire Calderone just weeks after the board decided not to renew his contract that expires in December.

The Times Union is reporting that Calderone has been in the intensive care unit at St. Peter’s Hospital since Monday, apparently due to symptoms of severe stress.

The board released this statement Thursday morning:

“The Albany County Airport Authority Board was never formally or informally notified of Mr. Calderone’s absence. And even as recently as Tuesday, the night before the meeting, there were indications that Mr. Calderone might attend Wednesday’s meeting. Authority staff had placed his nameplate at the table when preparing the room for Wednesday’s special board meeting. We later found out that Authority staff knew of Mr. Calderone’s condition as early as Monday, and chose to not alert the Board or any other relevant staff until after the Board contacted Mr. Calderone Wednesday around 12:00 p.m.”
