Albany business owner running 159 miles to mark Juneteenth anniversary

The 159th anniversary of the first Juneteenth has a special meaning for Angelo Maddox Jr. The Albany business owner is running 159 miles to mark the occasion. Juneteenth marks June 19, 1864, when Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas to inform the enslaved people that they were free.

Juneteenth marks June 19, 1864, when Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas to inform the enslaved people that they were free.

Freedom has a special meaning for Maddox. He was released from prison in August 1999. He has wiped the slate clean since then.

He is now the owner and operator of Fresh and Fly clothing on Pearl Street, as well as an author and proud father.

On his run, he will be making stops at Black-owned businesses along the way.
