Albany ceremony honors World War I hero Henry Johnson

State and local leaders are joining together in Albany today to honor the legacy of World War I hero, Henry Johnson.

State and local leaders joined together in Albany on Tuesday to honor the legacy of World War I hero, Henry Johnson.

As NewsChannel 13 reported on Monday, images and information about Johnson have been removed from the U.S. Army website because of President Trump’s efforts to do away with diversity, equity, and inclusion programs.

Sgt. Henry Johnson is an African American World War I hero from Albany. He’s perhaps best-known for fighting off a raid of German soldiers to save the lives of his fellow Americans.

Johnson’s story was shared to the public in front of the monument memorializing him, as government officials stressed the injustice of these federal efforts.

Johnson was also a Medal of Honor recipient. Tuesday, March 25 was Medal of Honor Day.
The U.S. Army’s Medal of Honor webpage for Johnson is still active.
