Assemblyman Smullen introduces bill to honor victims of fatal crashes.
An area state lawmaker is determined to turn his personal tragedy into a safety measure for every other New Yorker.
Alexander John Smullen, known as AJ, was struck and killed by a car on Route 7 in Niskayuna just over one year ago.
AJ’s father, State Assemblyman Robert Smullen has introduced the “Alexander John Smullen Traffic Safety Memorial Law.”
It will allow families to post roadside memorial signs at the site where their loved ones were killed.
It will also allow certain safety measures to be inscribed on those signs, reminding people not to drive and drive, or drive impaired.
The legislation comes at a time when motor vehicle crashes, including fatal crashes, have risen by 25% in the past five years.
