Averill Park students recommend Golden Knights for new mascot
Averill Park students have recommended Golden Knights as new name to replace the Warriors as its mascot name.
Students at Averill Park Central School District have recommended Golden Knights as the district’s new mascot.
Districts throughout the state have been phasing out Native-themed mascots. A student-led committee has been working to select a new nickname. Golden Knights received 54% of the vote among the two finalists compared with 46% for Lakers.
The Board of Education will meet on June 17 to accept the recommendation. The new nickname would go into effect for the 2025-2026 school year. The district will spend the next school year working to develop a new logo and mascot.
