Campaign launches to boost volunteer firefighter numbers in New York

The call to serve has never been louder. This weekend, fire departments across New York State will launch RecruitNY, a statewide initiative designed to address a critical volunteer shortage in local fire services.
With volunteer firefighter numbers down by nearly 40,000 from two decades ago, the campaign is targeting everyone from young adults to retirees, including those with administrative skills who may not wish to be on the front lines but still want to make a difference.
Officials emphasize that volunteers staff the vast majority of fire departments in New York, a fact that often surprises the public. Training is offered at no cost, and fire officials hope this weekend’s open houses will inspire recruits to step forward.

Beyond personnel, departments are facing growing financial challenges. Rising costs and dwindling manpower are putting a strain on local budgets. A single set of firefighter gear can cost around $5,000, and with limited funding sources, many departments depend heavily on grants and community fundraising.
“In today’s economy, volunteering your time without compensation is a hard sell,” said one official. “But we’re here to show that there’s a place for everyone—whether you’re working two jobs, raising kids, or just looking to give back.”
Officials want to make it clear that volunteer firefighters are not just emergency responders—they are neighbors and professionals who can volunteer a variety of skills to help keep communities safe.
