Car hits Albany building, causing gas leak, evacuations
A car crashed into a building in Albany on Wednesday afternoon, causing a gas leak, and school evacuations.
It happened just before 1:30 p.m. at the intersection of Elk Street and North Lake Avenue.
A deputy saw a speeding car near Clinton Avenue and Robin Street, the Albany County Sheriff’s Department said. The deputy turned around and tried to follow the car. However, the car crashed into a second car. That second car then hit a house, right at the gas meter. That caused a leak.
The suspect, Keonvion Lipscomb, 19, tried to run away, and was caught. He was then taken to the hospital complaining of leg pain, the sheriff said. Lipscomb is charged with reckless endangerment, criminal mischief, obstructing governmental administration, and reckless driving.
The driver of the other car was taken to the hospital with a head injury, the sheriff said.
Two schools in the area were also being evacuated, according to police. Students at Tony Clement Center for Education at 395 Elk St. were evacuated to Sheridan Prep, 400 Sheridan Ave., Albany.
Students at Brighter Choice Charter Elementary School for Boys, 116 N Lake Ave., were evacuated to Brighter Choice Charter School for Girls on Central Avenue.
