EDINBURG, N.Y. (WNYT) – Cleanup continued Sunday in Edinburg following an EF–1 Tornado that hit a part of the town last Tuesday.

As of Sunday, hundreds of trees still remain on the ground in neighbors’ backyards, docks are left upside down, and boats are left submerged in the Great Sacandaga Lake.

One neighbor we spoke to, Leann Fyvie, said the strength of the storm came as a surprise.

“I’ve never seen a storm like that up here in 37 years,” said Fyvie.

Fyvie said she was frightened during the storm.

“You couldn’t see a thing outside. You know, thunderstorms you can see outside. But it was almost five in the evening, and you couldn’t see anything out the window,” Fyvie said.

NewsChannel 13 last spoke with Alan Sofer last Thursday and Sunday he said that the last few days have been a nightmare.

“This has been a traumatic experience that I wouldn’t wish on anyone. Most of the neighbors around here have pulled together,” said Sofen.

Sofen said that he has been working around the clock since the storm trying to clean up.

“We’ve been working from sunup to sundown to try and get to some semblance of normalcy. And we need help, we want to thank the hard-hat workers who have been out on the road, who cleared the road and allowed us to get power after four days. National grid, Spectrum has been around,” Sofen said.

Alan said the damage is going to take longer than expected to fix.

“It’s going to take us months, if not years, to get back to where we are. And of course, the loss of the landscape will never, ever be the same,” Sofen said.
