Coeymans man arrested for assaulting deputies while intoxicated

The Albany County Sheriff’s Office arrested Thomas J. Mason Jr., 31, of Coeymans on a variety of charges, including assault, due to a disturbance in Coeymans that happened on Saturday.

Authorities say they received a report of an active disturbance on Main Street in Coeymans around 8:15 a.m.

When officials arrived, they observed Mason Jr. in the street who immediately became aggressive with the deputies and showing signs of intoxication.

Sheriff Craig Apple says deputies attempted to detain him as part of the investigation, but he became combative against authorities.

Eventually, this led to about twenty individuals surrounding deputies attempting to interfere with the arrest, said the Sheriff’s Office.

Apple says multiple deputies sustained injuries from arresting Mason Jr., given his combative actions.

Other juveniles were taken into custody for their involvement in the arrest, said the Sheriff’s Office.

Mason Jr. was charged with second-degree assault, second-degree obstructing governmental administration, and one count of resisting arrest.

In addition, a juvenile male that interfered with the arrest of Mason Jr. was arrested and charged with identical charges as Mason Jr. The juvenile was issued appearance tickets and is due to appear at Albany County Probation on September 18 at 10 a.m.

Mason Jr. was arraigned in Coeymans Town Court and remanded to the Albany County Correctional Facility in lieu of $60,000 cash bail or $80,000 bond. He is due to reappear in Coeymans Town Court on September 19 at 9 a.m.

The Sheriff’s Office says they were assisted by the New York State Police, Coeymans Police, Greene County Sheriff’s Office, and Coxsackie Police.
