Cohoes investigators mark somber anniversary in baby’s 2019 death
Tuesday marked five years since six-week-old Baby Eli died, setting in motion a murder case with twists and turns that gripped the region.
The baby had injuries to his ribs and head, said prosecutors, and toxic levels of methamphetamine that killed him.
Police never gave up. There have been court battles and an international manhunt.
His guardian, Anthony Ojeda, was facing charges including murder. However, he and his husband Neil Garzon skipped town in 2021.
Ojeda was one of the U.S. Marshals’ top 15 most wanted fugitives in the country. After more than two years on the run together, they were captured in Mexico.
Both men entered guilty pleas in October. Current and retired officers are expected to be there in force when the men are sentenced, which is scheduled for Jan. 10. It’s some measure of justice for a baby who was robbed of his life.
