Woman describes daughter’s difficulty transferring from College of Saint Rose
ALBANY – If your daughter happens to be a junior at the College of Saint Rose, majoring in communication sciences and disorders, and all of a sudden you find out you need to find a new school quickly, it is not an easy task, or feeling.
“Saint Rose was the ultimate school for her,” said the mother of a Saint Rose student who requested anonymity for herself and her daughter. “Saint Rose was going to offer her a great career path, so this is just very disappointing.”
For this family, the search for a new school began as soon as they heard the bad news about Saint Rose. They’ve been traveling hundreds of miles visiting new prospective campuses. They’ve conducted Zoom interviews with many more.
The “teach out” strategy they hoped would help them hasn’t been so helpful or as prevalent as they were led to believe.
“People that have an accounting major or finance, they’re able to go to the other local campuses,” the frustrated mom said. “She cannot. So she’s required to go hours away. Unfortunately a lot of schools did not have her major. No one local has her major. It’s just very disheartening. She lives at home and is able to stay employed and that will not be able to continue because she’s required to go hours away from home.”
The daughter is currently taking 20 credit hours this semester. She had recently signed up for summer classes at St. Rose (which would have sped up her path to graduation), however those classes were recently cancelled when too few students signed up.
The mom said she’s been on “an emotional rollercoaster ride” lately trying to find the right fit for her daughter.
“I don’t think we have a choice,” she stated. “I think we have to just do it.”
Among the schools that are under consideration, Ithaca College, Cortland, New Paltz and others.
The College of Saint Rose is on spring break this week and did not respond to a request for comment.
