Convicted killer denied youthful offender status in 2011 manslaughter

A convicted killer in Albany has been denied youthful offender status, and will serve a full 25-year sentence for manslaughter.

Jah-Lah Vanderhorst, 30, stabbed 17-year-old Tyler Rhodes to death in Hoffman Park, back in 2011. Vanderhorst was 16 years old at the time.

He appeared in court Thursday to have his case heard by a New York State Supreme Court judge.

That judge told Vanderhorst that he has had at least 24 violations while in DOCCS custody over the last 13 years, including drugs, violence, and weapons offenses.

In her decision, Judge Andra Ackerman said Vanderhorst lacked remorse and did not understand the severity of his crimes.

He will now serve roughly 12 more years in state prison.
