Cooking fire heavily damages Greenport apartment

A cooking fire heavily damaged an apartment in Greenport on Thursday night.

Firefighters were called to 71 Ten Broeck Avenue at 8:52 p.m. Greenport Fire Chief Mark Taylor said the people left the apartment and did not close the door, which provided oxygen to fuel the fire.

About 45 firefighters from the Greenport and Hudson Fire departments had it under control in about 20 minutes, according to Taylor.

There were no injuries.

Taylor did not know how many people were displaced. He said police have responded to problems at that apartment. He believed the tenants were in the process of being evicted, and he didn’t know if the people who were there when the fire started were the residents.

“We have no clue who was even in the apartment when the fire started. They ran away,” he said.
