Correction officers continue strikes

This comes after the New York State Department of Corrections said that if they didn't return to work by 11:59 p.m. on Thursday, they would face consequences.

Correction officers continued their strike early Friday morning in Coxsackie, outside the Coxsackie and Greene Correctional Facilities.

The New York State Department of Corrections issued a “Path to Restoring the Workforce” memo on Thursday afternoon.

The memo from the commissioner of the New York State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision (DOCCS) said that workers who return to by 11:59 p.m. Thursday won’t face disciplinary action.

The memo also included a temporary suspension of parts of the HALT law, that reduces how long an inmate can be held in solitary confinement.

NewsChannel 13 spoke with retired correction officers that have been on the picket lines, and they said that DOCCS needs to meet all of the correction officers demands.

They said staffing levels need to be increased. The memo today said that the current 70% of staffing levels in now the new normal.

They also said that correction officers’ families have to constantly worry that their loved runs won’t return home from work safely, they said this needs to stop.

DOCCS has not said what the disciplinary action will be for the workers that don’t return to work and continue to strike.

This is a developing story. We will have updates on the strike on NewsChannel 13 TODAY beginning at 5 a.m. and on WNYT.com.
