Correction officers union says it has not been involved in reported deal to end illegal strikes

The union representing correction officers reiterated Thursday that it has not been involved in a reported deal to end the unsanctioned strikes and won't be signing any such agreement. The New York State Correctional Officers and Police Benevolent Association said at a news conference on Wednesday that there outside parties interjecting themselves into negotiations on behalf of members at selected facilities who still refuse to go to work.

The union representing correction officers reiterated Thursday that it has not been involved in a reported deal to end the unsanctioned strikes and won’t be signing any such agreement.

The New York State Correctional Officers and Police Benevolent Association said at a news conference on Wednesday that there outside parties interjecting themselves into negotiations on behalf of members at selected facilities who still refuse to go to work.

Many of the concessions that have been reportedly agreed upon are already included in the mediator’s consent award that NYSCOPBA leaders negotiated with the state and the Department of Corrections and Community Supervision.

This included a suspension on certain provisions of the law governing the use of solitary confinement and limits on overtime.

The union said the agreement that has been circulating in the media was not negotiated with NYSCOPA – as legally required.

“There are substantial legal issues that must be addressed, and as presented, this agreement does not represent the best interests of our membership,” the union said in a statement.

The union said it is working to engage DOCCS and the state to reopen talks with the mediator.

“This approach would ensure that any resulting Consent Award is legally binding in court,” it said.
