Council votes in favor of awarding benefits to Glens Falls firefighter forced off job

The common council voted in favor of letting Fire Lt. Doug Holl retire early with full benefits. The decision was made on Tuesday night at Glens Falls City Hall.

As NewsChannel 13 has reported, Holl was diagnosed with Early-Onset Alzheimer’s Disease.

He was a firefighter for over 17 years but needed 20 years of service to receive full pension.

His fellow firefighters donated their sick time and vacation hours to get him to that finish line. Despite the generous offer, Holl was first told “no” by city officials. Even with holl’s wife, Heather pleading with the city on numerous occasions.

Mayor Bill Collins said he was unsure if it was legal to donate PTO. After talking to lawyers and looking at state law, it is legal.

“I couldn’t bring it to the floor unless our attorneys said this was OK. It’s an honor to do it. Doug is a great man,” he said.

The council made a vote that let the Holl’s breathe a sigh of relief.

“Our key focus is just working on his health and getting him hyperbaric oxygen therapy this summer,” Heather said. “That’s our next step and having less stress in the house.”
