Crews battled a large fire at the Spier Falls Dam Saturday. The dam is a hydroelectric dam in the Moreau Lake State Park.
The Corinth Fire Department was on the scene along with neighboring departments. One firefighter told NewsChannel 13 that there were up to 30 fire trucks on scene.
Our Zach Richter spoke to Steven Clothier who lives by the dam and said he called 911 around 4 p.m. when he first saw smoke. He said he worked at the dam for almost 30 years.
“It’s all wooden beams on the floor for the entire length of that building,” Clothier said. “I’m saddened. There’s a lot of history there.”
NewsChannel 13 also spoke with Sherene Scott who was at her mother’s house and watched everything unfold.
“I was just coming down here to see my mom and hang out. We were just doing s’mores, and all of a sudden, we saw the smoke come up, and we walked across the street, and sure enough, there was smoke. And then we watched the fire,” Scott said.
She said the smoke increased into the evening.
“When it first started, one side was black. The other side was like white, like normal smoke. And then they kind of started mushing together. And then I would say within the last hour or so is when we’ve really noticed that the fire has been prevalent,” said Scott.
There has been no possible cause of the fire released yet.
NewsChannel 13 reached out to the Corinth Fire Department, but they said they were unable to provide any details at this time.
