Eighty people working to fight Great Barrington wildfire
Firefighters in Berkshire County continued their work Tuesday to tame a wildfire on East Mountain.
Dave Celino, Chief Fire Warden for the Massachusetts Commonwealth, said they need rain and colder temperatures to help tame the fire.
They are 7 inches below the normal amount of precipitation right now, he said.
Celino said there is no threat to the public. However, he also noted on Tuesday afternoon there’s no containment to the fire.
“To get containment, you really have to anchor that fire to something solid where it’s not going to burn, it’s not going to break out of the perimeter,” he said. A fire like this – it’s rugged in the terrain that it’s in. It is not uncommon to see days go by.”
They’ve got an 80-person crew on scene, Celino said.
Because of the terrain, there is a lot of this fire they can’t reach.
Fire crews are asking you to please follow the warnings and the messages from city, county and state officials in Massachusetts and New York about burn bans.
