Deal reached for $50 million ice hockey rink in Schenectady
Union College and Schenectady County have reached an agreement to build a $50 million arena at Mohawk Harbor as part of a public-private partnership.
The 97,178-square-foot arena will feature a 2,200 seat ice hockey rink. It will have the capacity to expand to 3,600 seats for other sporting events, trade shows, special events and conventions, the county said in a statement.
Union College has negotiated a long-term lease with the developer, West Yard Properties, to be the primary tenant. The city will pay $20 million over 25 years to host the school’s men’s and women’s hockey programs.
The project also includes $10 million in state funding, $5 million from Schenectady County and $2.5 million from the city.
Neil Golub, retired Price Chopper/Market 32 CEO, has contributed $1 million.
Construction will begin in the spring and will be completed in time for the 2025-2026 hockey season.
