DNA cracks Vermont infant’s 1982 death investigation
A 1982 cold case of a dead infant in Vermont has been solved. No one will be charged.
The baby’s body was found by kids waiting for a school bus in Northfield, about an hour southeast of Burlington.
Police used modern DNA technology to find the biological parents, who are still alive.
Mom said she didn’t know she was pregnant and the dad was out of town.
She lost consciousness while in labor and woke up to see a baby with an umbilical cord wrapped around its neck.
She tried to bury the baby but got scared and slipped when she heard voices nearby.
The baby also had prior medical conditions, according to a doctor.
While mom’s actions are grounds for illegally disposing a dead body, the statute of limitations has passed, police said.
