Dramatic video shows moment plane crashed near Colonie neighborhood
NewsChannel 13 has obtained video of the Colonie plane crash in the final moments before impact.
The troubled airplane is only visible for a split second or two before it disappears behind some pine trees.
You can see a silhouette of the descending aircraft with its wings apparently tilting to the right, just before it disappears behind a large pine tree and explodes, sending a large plume of thick, black smoke billowing into the sky.
The ill-fated plane took off from Runway 1-9, the north-south runway, at 8:15 Monday morning. That means it took off heading south.
The plane was headed for Montreal, which is north.
The direction the plane is headed at the time of the crash appears toward the north, which means it had already turned around, or was in the process of banking left, to head north when it went down.
That’s one of the many things the National Transportation Safety Board will be looking at. It’s not clear if this particular aircraft had a black box.
It is too early at this point to know if the plane was having mechanical trouble or if pilot error was a factor.
The piece of video might just be one of the many clues that help investigators solve this aviation mystery that ended up literally in a local resident’s backyard.
You can watch the video as part of Dan Levy’s story.
