On Monday, Orange County fire officials continue fighting wildfires around Greenwood Lake. Now, East Berne and Berne fire officials have answered the call to help. Early Monday morning, 12 volunteers from both departments have been deployed to help get the wildfires under control.

According to officials, about 1800 acres have been affected, and local structures have been damaged. Fire officials say that volunteers have been calling the station since Saturday…ready to help however they can.

“Our volunteer service is great. The Berne fire district specifically,” Scott Duncan, Chief of East Bern Fire, said. “Everybody has a lot of members that are calling. Trying to help out, even before we got the deployment list. So our guys are always willing to help.”

The department will send two brush units and two wildland ATVs. Chief Duncan also says the volunteers will work 12-hour shifts and plan to stay in the area until 8 p.m. tonight.
