A former UAlbany police officer is facing 15 years in prison after admitting to sexually assaulting an 11-year-old girl.

John Dizon, of Cornwall, pleaded guilty in Albany County Court on Monday to first-degree rape, according to Alaina Finan, special prosecutor for the case.

Dizon had sexual contact with the child in Bethlehem during the summer of 2022, Finan said. He was a friend of the victim’s family, Finan said.

At the time of the incident, Dizon was working for the University at Albany. When he was arrested in June 2023, he was no longer working for UAlbany, but was employed by the Newburgh Police Department.

Dizon was charged with predatory sexual assault against a child, criminal sex act, rape and sexual abuse. He waived a formal indictment and pleaded guilty to the one rape charge to resolve the case.

He is scheduled to be sentenced on May 30.
