One person was hurt and seven people were displaced from their home after a fire in Albany on Christmas.

Multiple families are without a home, and one posted on social media about how this has become the worst Christmas for her and the kids.

The fire broke out behind a vacant duplex 528-530 Second St. in the West Hills neighborhood just before 10 p.m. The fire spread to 526 Second St., where seven residents were able to evacuate before Albany firefighters arrived, according to Albany Fire Chief Joseph Gregory.

It took around two hours to get the fire under control, according to investigators. One person was injured and was transported to a local hospital, they said.

The exact cause is undetermined, but it appears to be accidental, Gregory said. It started in a living space area in the rear of the first floor of 530 Second St.

Squatters were living in the vacant building, according to Mayor Kathy Sheehan.

All three structures will be demolished – possibly by the end of Monday, Sheehan said.

The fire shows the challenge of dealing with vacant buildings, according to Sheehan. She said she believes the structure was bank owned.

β€œIt was on the market for a price that far exceeds anything it possibly would have been worth,” she said.
