4pm: Family friend remembers three-year-old who died in Manchester VT fire

A mother and baby are still hospitalized after a deadly fire in Bennington County. The fire claimed the life of a three-year-old boy.

There’s not much left of the mobile home on Upper Road in Manchester Center, Vermont.

There are many reminders of the three children who used to live here.

“I just am heartbroken because Carrie has called me grandma since the day she could talk,” said family friend Wanita Moffitt.

5pm: Neighbor collects clothes & toys for children after fatal fire

A one-year-old is fighting for her life in the same hospital where her mother is being treated after a devastating fire in Bennington County. That fire claimed the life of a three-year-old boy.

Moffitt has known the family across the street for years.

“I looked out my window and I saw smoke, so I grabbed my phone to call 911. I wasn’t sure if it was me or somebody else,” she said. “When I stood up, I saw smoke over to Carrie’s across the road from me and before I could even dial, the flames were like eight foot tall and the trailer was gone in a heartbeat.”

Police say a three-year-old child died at the scene of Sunday’s fire.

Family friends say that was Marcus.

“Just devastating. I know the setup of the trailer. I’ve been in it a thousand times. The bedroom facing my trailer which burnt first was where Marcus died. He had no chance even if somebody tried to get to him they couldn’t have. And Carrie did try to get to him,” she said.

We’re told another man in the house, Kardar, also tried to save the boy.

Wanita says his one-year-old sister and mother are still hospitalized. A four year old sister is with a relative.

NewsChannel 13 was informed of a donation drop-off at Mulligan’s in Manchester for Kardar, and Carrie and her children.

Wanita lives across from the fire scene on Upper Road. She says she’ll collect any donations of clothes or shoes or toys on her front porch.

“I’m trying to do right by all of them,” she said. “They’re family. No matter if they’re blood or not, they’re my family. I just want to help them out. They have nothing they lost all their clothing, the kids’ toys. She just bought Willow a crib in December, it’s all gone. Everything.”

Here are the clothing sizes we’ve been given:

Carrie: pants 12, T-shirt medium, shoes size 10.
4-year-old girl: size 8, shoes 12 kids, loves dolls and girly stuff.
Baby: 3-4T, size 5 diapers, loves frogs.
