Firefighters don’t have access to fire hydrants on the Thruway. That made things very tough when a tractor carrying liquid hydrogen caught fire on the Thruway, Wednesday evening.
The fire happened between exits 23 and 24.
Firefighters had to get three engines, each carrying about 750 gallons of water. Then they had to navigate their way through traffic.
The driver was able to pull over and safely get out of harm’s way.
Police blocked traffic, and firefighters were able to quickly put out the fire before it spread to the trailer, and the very flammable contents inside.
