A landmark Cohoes restaurant is likely a total loss after a fire on Wednesday morning as staff prepared to open for lunch, according to Cohoes’ fire chief.
Employees were opening the Hot Dog Charlie’s restaurant on Saratoga Street around 10 a.m., when they reported the fire.
The fire was mostly contained to the top of the building. However, firefighters had to rip out part of the ceiling and pour lots of water on it.
Luckily, no one was hurt, investigators said. Regular customers said the place was filled with nostalgia and memories for them. The Cohoes location had been open since 1964, part of a family-owned business that has two other locations.
In 2009, a fire ripped through the Hot Dog Charlie’s in Troy.
The cause of Wednesday’s fire is under investigation, and Fire Chief Joseph Fahd said they were looking at whether it was sparked when workers fired up the fryers.
