FIRST ON 13: Niskayuna man charged in Virginia murder picked up from Schenectady County Jail

The Niskayuna man accused of killing a Virginia woman in 1994 has been picked up by Virginia authorities, NewsChannel 13 has learned.

Schenectady County District Attorney Bob Carney confirmed that Stephan Smerk has been taken from Schenectady County Jail back to Virginia.   

Smerk is accused of stabbing Robin Lawrence to death at her Fairfax County home while her 2-year-old daughter was inside.

Smerk was on active duty in the Army and stationed in Virginia at the time. The case remained unsolved for nearly three decades until forensic scientists developed a DNA profile and began searching genealogical databases,

Smerk had agreed to waive extradition.
