Gillibrand demands answers on Trump’s hiring freeze

U.S. Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand is expressing concern that President Donald Trump's hiring freeze could affect people receiving Social Security, Medicare or veterans' benefits.

U.S. Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand is expressing concern that President Donald Trump’s hiring freeze could affect people receiving Social Security, Medicare or veterans’ benefits.

Gillibrand pointed out that the number of employees who process Social Security and Medicare applications has hit a 27-year-low. Also, the Department of Veterans Affairs has a severe shortage of doctors and nurses and there is a long wait time for appointments and hold time for phone calls, according to Gillibrand.

Gillibrand has sent a letter to the White House demanding answers on the effect the hiring freeze will have on these programs.

“It is an ill-conceived, short-sighted plan that will hurt New Yorkers. I am calling on President Trump to reverse course immediately,” she said.
