Glens Falls expects to complete downtown revitalization projects this year

The city of Glens Falls expects to complete work on its $10 million transformational redevelopment of its downtown by the end of the year.

The state funding was announced back in 2017, and the project is slowly starting to come to fruition. Much of it is focused along South Street. The Market Center is the centerpiece of the project. The proposed 6,000-square-foot facility will house a year-round farmers market and events.

Work is progressing on a project by Saratoga Springs developer Sonny Bonacio to redevelop three buildings – including the former Hot Shots building at 45 South St., former Sandy’s Clam Bar at 41 South St. and the former garment factory and business incubator space at 36 Elm St.

The city signed a 10-year lease with Bonacio to lease the first floor at 36 Elm St. to house additional event space, which originally going to be in The Market Center. The size of that building was downsized as costs increased.

There will be a demonstration kitchen and a catering kitchen for local events.

Bonacio is also constructing a new 88-unit workforce apartment building on an adjacent parking lot using funds from a separate state grant.

City officials said that the state funds have spurred over $30 million in private investment.
