After a 9 hour standoff, East Greenbush police arrested a man they say barricaded himself inside a home with a weapon. This incident was confirmed to be the reason for “heavy police presence” in the surrounding area.
According to police, they received a call about a burglary taking place at 5 Evergreen Way around 5:49 in the morning. Our crews got there a little after 1 in the afternoon to find the whole block filled with police officers from surrounding agencies.
Police did not tell us the suspect’s name, but they did tell us the suspect was in the home with a family member. Upon police arrival, the suspect would not leave and instead barricaded himself inside with a weapon.
Police from Rensselaer city, North Greenbush, Troy, Colonie, New York State and the Rensselaer county sheriff’s department arrived on the scene to handle the situation. Neighbors tell us they heard police yelling through a bull horn “…come out with your hands up”.
Police were able to safely remove the homeowner from the home. Our crew witnessed police using tear gas to get the suspect out the house. Police tell us the suspect was taken into custody around 2:30 in the afternoon. They tell us there were no injuries to the victim, the suspect, or police.
