The city of Albany is celebrating Henry Johnson Day.
Monday is the 106th anniversary of Sgt. Johnson’s enlistment in World War I.
This holiday also recognizes how he returned home from war and spoke out against the prejudice he faced in the segregated Army.
The anniversary was commemorated for the first time at the Henry Johnson Charter School in front of third and fourth graders.
They also kicked off nominations for the seventh annual Henry Johnson Award for Distinguished Community Service.
Nominations are due August 18.
The award will be presented at Albany’s Riverfront Jazz Festival in September.
