State unveils plan to fight organized retail theft including $45 million funding.

Gov. Kathy Hochul is proposing $45 million in funding to help New York State Police fight organized retail theft.

The plan includes $25 million for New York State Police to establish a Smash and Grab Enforcement Unit. There will also be $10 million to help local district attorneys prosecute crimes, $5 million for local law enforcement agencies and $5 million toward tax credits to help businesses offset the cost of store security measures.

Hochul is also proposing to change the laws to protect retail workers and establish criminal penalties for online marketplaces that sell stolen goods.
