Hochul signs trio of laws she hopes will curb gun violence

By putting pen to paper, Gov. Kathy Hochul signed three new laws aimed at tightening gun restrictions in New York state.

Gov. Kathy Hochul on Thursday signed three new laws aimed at tightening gun restrictions in New York state.

Gov. Hochul added pistol converters to the definition of rapid-fire modification devices, outlawing their sale or manufacture.

Another law requires gun dealers to inform customers about the danger of owning firearms.

A third new law requires credit card companies to track purchases of ammunition to find out if someone is stockpiling it, and then share the information with law enforcement.

“We are doing what we can do, but Republicans in Washington also have an opportunity to look at what we’ve done in a place like New York. I dare say there is not a Republican state that can match our statistics,” Hochul said.

The governor touted gun violence prevention legislation already enacted since she took office, taking credit for a 53% reduction in shootings, along with a murder rate that dropped by 40%.

“Since I took office, I’ve been tracking the data. One of the first things I did was create an interstate gun task force; the first in the nation. I think we now have 11 states that cooperate to share data and we’ve done a tremendous amount in getting guns off the streets in addition to our red flag laws,” Hochul said. “We can take credit for 10,000 guns being off the streets of New York.”

The governor plans to invest $370 million in an effort to combat gun violence across New York.
