Gov. Hochul is ramping up the state’s commitment to bring more diversity into medicine.
Now a total of more than $2.4 million will go to programs to encourage traditionally unrepresented students into the physician workforce – doubling last year’s funding.
Hochul says more than 30% of the state’s population is Black or Hispanic, and only 12% of physicians represent those demographics.
Hochul’s office says research shows patients seeing doctors from their own health backgrounds have better outcomes.
