Identity of VSP officer who was shot and wounded released, search for suspect continues

The Vermont State Police say Captain Jason Gray is the police officer who was shot and wounded Friday afternoon.

Police say Gray, a nearly 25-year veteran of the St. Johnsbury Police Department, is currently at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, New Hampshire, where his condition remains serious, but stable.

State Police say the search for the suspect, 38-year-old Scott Mason of St. Johnsbury, remains active and ongoing.

Officials say an arrest warrant has been issued for Mason in connection with the shooting. He is wanted on charges of attempted second-degree murder and aggravated assault on a law-enforcement officer resulting in serious bodily injury.

NewsChannel 13 has been made aware of tips being posted online of the suspect possibly being located within Rensselaer County, particularly Hoosick Falls. We reached out to police, and they told us following an investigation in Hoosick Falls, they did not locate Mason.

Hoosick Falls Police told us that they received credible information Saturday morning about Mason possibly located at a residence on Mechanic Street. After they conducted a thorough search and an investigation, police say they did not find any evidence of the suspect at the residence.
