Inmate dies in prison on the same day as man who killed Rensselaer girl
A second inmate at Elmira Correctional Facility died on the same day last week as the man convicted of raping and killing a 3-year-old Rensselaer girl.
The Department of Corrections and Community Supervision said 59-year-old William Brand was found dead at about 2:52 a.m. He also was serving time for a crime involving child sexual assault. He was convicted in Franklin County Court of course of sexual conduct against a child and sentenced to 10 years in prison.
The cause has not been released.
Brand’s death occurred a little more than one hour after Robert Fisher was found dead. Fisher had just begun a sentence of 20 years to life for killing 3-year-old Josefina Cunningham in July 2023.
State Police spokeswoman Lynnea Crane said an autopsy has been conducted on Fisher. The cause of death is pending. They are still waiting for toxicology results. There was nothing further on the investigation.
NewsChannel 13 has reached for more information on Brand’s death but have not heard back.
The Times Union was first to report the story of the second inmate’s death.
