UPDATE: Crews are temporarily suspending their search for a 31-year-old fisherman in the Mohawk River.

The Montgomery County Sheriff, Jeff Smith says they’ll pick back up the search again on Friday at 7 a.m. in Fort Hunter.

Sheriff Smith says he spoke with witnesses, including a friend who was with the fisherman. They told Sheriff Smith the man’s line got snagged and he dropped his pole. He bent down to grab it and fell in.

Dispatch got the call at 11:35 a.m. on Thursday about a man who fell into the Mohawk. Officers arrived on scene under 3 minutes and got to work.

Sheriff Smith says the 31-year-old was fishing near Lock 12 in Fort Hunter. The current is strong and it made for tough conditions.

There was roughly 50 people searching for the fisherman, including drones and sonar.

The man’s family is being updated about the search by the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office.

ORIGINAL STORY: There’s a large police presence along the Erie Canal and Mohawk River in Montgomery County. They are searching for a 31-year-old fisherman who fell in the river, investigators said.

Multiple boats and dive teams are on scene.

Main Street between Tribes Hill and Fort Hunter is shut down.

Detours are in place.
