Law banning sale of pets in stores to take effect Dec. 15. It is intended to stop dangerous large scale breeding operations.

In less than a month, retail stores in NY state will no longer legally be allowed to sell pets.

A new law banning the sale goes into effect Dec. 15.

The ban is intended to stop dangerous large-scale breeding operations.

Pet stores can still partner with registered, nonprofit animal rescue groups. Also, they can collect rental fees from rescue groups to provide space to showcase pets for adoption.

Violators of the law could face penalties of up to $1,000 per violation.
