Law enforcement: Drone sightings in 518 don’t pose ongoing threat

A mystery drone was spotted in the sky hovering around the Capital Region this weekend. Many wondered what it was doing there.

Sheriffs for Albany and Saratoga counties received numerous phone calls from residents, they said. At this time, both law enforcement agencies say there is no evidence to suggest that the drone sightings pose an ongoing threat.

One of the people who saw it was Darrin Scott Kibbey. He was only outside Sunday night because he had no power, he said, and was hoping to see someone from National Grid.

That’s when he saw flashing red, blue and white lights coming from the sky, which spooked him.
He did not realize what it was at first, but Kibbey said the drone was moving in all directions.

Albany County Sheriff Craig Apple said he’s been assured the drones are not military or from a foreign country. He believes what we’re seeing is people putting drones up to try to instill fear in others.

However, he understands people’s fear.

One thing law enforcement want you to know – if you see drones, do not call 911. You can call your local police station’s non-emergency number and report drone sightings. Also, send photos and videos that you have. It’s helpful to investigators, but don’t flood the emergency line.
