Lawmakers blast potential cuts to Social Security offices

U.S. Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand and Gov. Kathy Hochul criticized the Trump administration's proposed cuts to Social Security. The Department Of Government Efficiency has listed 47 Social Security Administration Offices for closure – including two in New York.

U.S. Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand and Gov. Kathy Hochul criticized the Trump administration’s proposed cuts to Social Security.

The Department Of Government Efficiency has listed 47 Social Security Administration Offices for closure – including two in New York.

The lawmakers held a news conference Friday at the SSA Office at the Leo O’Brien Federal Building.

They said SSA has announced plans to cut 7,000 staff – despite the fact that staffing is at a 50-year low. They are expressing concern that the cutbacks would limit phone support for the agency and force people to handle claims online – which can be difficult for seniors.
