Local Head Start program may be forced to shut down over federal funding concerns
Head Start Warren County in Glens Falls has been around for about 60 years, but the federally funded facility might have to temporarily shut down on April 19, because it hasn’t received its most recent batch of federal funding.
Head Start’s Executive Director Shari Marci sent a letter out to families Friday to let them know about the dire situation.
Marci spoke with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HSS), she said. They told her that they have the money but its currently frozen.
When Marci asked when it would be unfrozen, they said most likely May or June. However, Marci said the facility does have enough money to keep running until then.
Head Start Warren County provides programing to pregnant woman, children from birth to five years old and their families. The program is free and is available to low-income families who qualify.
Marci tells NewsChannel that there are 183 children in the program, and she is worried what will happen to the parent’s jobs.
“They are not going to be able to afford a daycare center. They may lose their jobs.” said Marci.
NewsChannel 13 has reached out to HSS and have not yet heard back.
