Man, 75, dead in Granville fire

A 75-year-old man has died in a fire in Granville.

A 75-year-old man is dead after a fire Monday in Granville.

State Police responded to a residence on County Route 21 at around 8:15 p.m. Troopers found the structure engulfed in flames.

The homeowner, Gene W. Bassett, was found dead in the residence after firefighters put out the fire.

Washington County Fire Coordinator Glenn Bristol said the fire appears to have started in front of the single-story house. Firefighters got it under control in around 20 minutes.

The cause is still under investigation, but Bristol said it appears to be accidental.

The victim was the only resident. An autopsy is pending.

The responding fire departments included Middle Granville, North Granville, Hampton, Hartford in New York and Poultney, West Pawlet, and Wells from Vermont.

The Washington County Sheriff’s Office, Washington County fire investigators and the Granville Fire Department assisted at the scene.
